Make sure that you have the proper forms and that they know you will be performing a screening of some sort on them be it a professional employment screening or a criminal records check. Remember yes you do in all likelihood need to know, but how much do you need to know is the question. There are rules and laws in place protecting people from being hurt attacked because of their past especially if they have made up for it.
Be aware of how you may be affecting these applicants in both a positive and a negative way. If the check that is performed gives you enough information to make a decision then there is no need to go any further and therefore you should not. Resist the temptation as doing so could get you in a lot of trouble if you do too much. Remember you need to protect yourself and your company as well.
