Growing up I had a wonderful Chesapeake Bay Retriever who used to go everywhere with me. She loved swimming in the summer and we spent a lot of time at the lake, playing fetch. When I went away to university, I think that dog was the thing I missed the most from home. When I finished university, Betsy was pretty old and I was unsure about whether or not I should take her from my folk’s house. But I loved her so much that, after talking to her vet, I decided to move her in with me.
After a couple of months I realized that I would need a roommate to help with the bills. My best friend was looking for a place to live so we decided to try living together. The only thing was, she had her own dog, a gorgeous Rhodesian Ridgeback. I wasn’t sure how Betsy would take to her, so we decided to have them “meet” before we made the decision to move in. I couldn’t believe how well they hit it off! Betsy immediately went into Mom mode, licking and cleaning my friend’s dog, who just loved it. Now the two dogs may be better friends than their owners!

I love my old Retriever so much that I don’t care about high vet bills. Just so long as my beloved old friend has a good time and isn’t in pain. When life stops being fun for him, I might think about having him put down.
It’s a sad fact of life that dogs just don’t live as long as people do. When they get older, you just need to prepare yourself for the fact that one day your loyal old friend won’t be there.
I love my old dog so much I’m looking into having him cloned so I can get a puppy that looks just like him. It’s expensive, but I just couldn’t stand it if my old pal went away and never came back.
When you have an older dog, it’s only humane to be sure that the animal is comfortable and can get in and out of the house easily to go into the yard. Also, older dogs usually need more water than younger dogs do.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a great dog to have if you live near a lake or river. Boy do they love water! But you need to have somewhere for them to run around afterwards to dry off. You don’t want wet dog stink in your house.
